Finding the Right Grants for School
Along with the large number of schools going online, you also have many financial aid programs available online. Some of these financial aid programs come in college loans or grants.
What is the difference between a college loan and a college grant? There is a big difference. College loans are actually loans which you can take out from a bank or finance company to pay for your college education. College loans do have to be paid back on interest, like any other loan. The difference, however, is that college loans have a lower interest rate than conventional loans and can paid off on a much longer time frame than, say, a personal loan or other type of loan.
College grants, on the other hand, are different. Unlike a loan, which has to be paid back, grant is money which is given to you for financing your education. Typically, yo do not have to pay a grant back, but there are strings attached.
How do you qualify for a grant? There are many organizations which give out grants for school, including the government. Some organizations and businesses will also give out college grants to the right candidates. Most of the standard qualifications for college grants are as follows:
- GPA is very important when applying for a college grant. Many organizations who give out grants look at your GPA, or grade point average. This is why if you are junior or senior in high school and are looking to get into a good college, you need to make sure you have an exceptional GPA. Even though a 3.5 GPA may be good, it may not be good enough to qualify for a college grant. You should strive for a GPA of 4.0 or higher and stand out from the crowd.
- Possessing a certain talent is also crucial to getting a good college grant. Many schools are looking for an exceptional athlete, someone who is exceptionally good in science, art, or other subject. It all depends on what schools you are looking to apply at.
What resources are available for grant applications? There are many websites where you can apply for a college grant. Some of the sites recommended include the US Government, your state government, different colleges, endowments, and more.
How do I know what I am eligible for? You need to do a little research. What are your achievements? How talented are you in a particular area? Are you good in sports, math, science, or other subjects?
You may also want to look at specialty schools. For example, if you are good at fine arts, you may want to see if you qualify for a grant or scholarship at the Art Institute, if you like engineering or agriculture, look into applying at Purdue University, etc.
There are many options out there for colleges and grants for school. All you need to do is find the right resources and if you meet all the criteria, there will be something for you.
